Men’s and women’s tennis teams defend Trojan territory

The Trojans men’s tennis team went 2-1 this weekend in the Trojan Jamboree, while the women’s tennis team won both of its matches.

The men’s team faced off first against Nicholls State on Friday, Feb. 20. Troy won three of its six singles matches and won two doubles with the third line unfinished.

No. 89 junior Gabriel Dias beat sophomore Sam Meessen 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Hassan Ndayishimye won his match 6-2, 6-4 against sophomore Partha Adavelly.

Sophomore Pablo Moreno won his match against sophomore Bernard Wezeman 7-6, 6-4.

Moreno and freshman Andy Lau won their doubles match against Wezeman and sophomore Kieran Cronin 6-2.

Dias and Ndayishimye won their match 6-1 against Meessen and sophomore Max Sinn, and junior Giovani Samaha and freshman Calum McKinlay’s match against Adavelly and junior Evan Karatzas was unfinished.

Troy also won against Georgia Southern on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The Trojans won in similar fashion as to how they won against Nicholls State as the team once again won three of six singles matches and won two doubles matches with the third line unfinished.

Ndayishimye won 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 against junior Ristomatti Lanne. Lau beat sophomore Christian Kerrigan 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and junior Daniel Bustamante won 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 against freshman Jose Landin.

Lau and Moreno won against senior Kyle Hoffman and sophomore Nico de Groof, 6-1. Samaha and freshman Austin Racine won their match 6-0 against Kerrigan and Lanne.

Ndayishimye and sophomore Andre Baldo’s match against senior Albert Codina Sala and Landin was unfinished.

Rain on Sunday, Feb. 22, caused the matches to be cancelled.

Troy was one match win away from upsetting No. 20 Tennessee on Monday, Feb. 23, but the Volunteers won the third set at No. 4 singles, clenching the win.

Troy won three of its singles matches. Ndayishimye defeated redshirt senior Hunter Reese 7-5, 6-4. Bustamante won his match 6-4, 7-5 against junior Bartosz Sawicki, and Samaha won his match against senior Brandon Fickey 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Troy won one of its three doubles matches. Dias and Ndayishimye won 7-6 against Sawicki and freshman Luis Valero.

The Trojans women’s tennis team went undefeated at the Trojan Jamboree.

The women’s team beat Nicholls State on Friday, Feb. 20.  It won three of the six singles matches. Junior Trang Huynh won her match against sophomore Stephanie Barnett 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Jiayuan Xue won her match 6-3, 6-3 against freshman Milou Pietersz, and freshman Linnea Skymberg defeated junior Kateryna Nakonechna 6-4, 7-6.

Troy won two of its doubles matches with line two unfinished. Junior Anja Cosovic and Huynh won 6-2 against Barnett and Pietersz.

Freshman Sanae Ohta and junior Brooke Durden won against senior Marie Aubert and sophomore Klara Skopac 6-0.

Troy defeated Alabama A&M effortlessly. Troy won every one of the singles matches with two sets and no set going over 6-2, and won two doubles matches with the first line unfinished. Neither one of the two doubles matches sets went over the score of 6-1.

The men’s team’s next matchup is against South Alabama on Thursday, Feb. 26, in Mobile, and the women’s team’s next matchup is against UL Lafayette in Troy on Saturday, Feb. 28.
